The tour studies at its core the archaeological site of Philippi with particular reference to the two Macedonian kings, through its discoveries and traditions. Meanwhile it connects to different other important archeological and natural sites that reflect traditions and myths of Alexander the Great.

Finally it reveals the gastronomical preferences of the Hellenistic ages and the cuisine of King Philip the II of Macedon and Alexander the Great, provided through local restaurant and winery shops to all visitors.

This travel experience is specially designed by historians, travel guides, chefs and local experts to present you with the historical era of King Philip the II of Macedon and his son Alexander the Great, connecting the ancient city of Philippi (UNESCO monument) and the Philippi Park region with the legends of these two important personalities.

The visitor will enjoy all the history geek details on the economic and everyday life of the region, the important achievements of the two men, the legends and myths connected to their names, historic battles that took place and shaped history, but will also meet the horse traditions of the area closely bonded with Bucephalus horse of Alexander the Great and finally get to taste the gastronomy and wine that these kings used to have at their dinner tables with specially designed dishes served by traditional restaurants.

Meanwhile the city of Drama and the city of Kavala with its beautiful beaches and old town and local customs and traditions at nearby villages, will be devoured after completing the morning guided tours at this legendary region.

The
PROGRAM
FULL DAY
Gathering at starting point Guided Tour at the monument of Vibius Quartus, the so-called “Orthopetra” or “Dikili Tash”. Otherwise known as the “crib of Bucephalus” overlooking the homonym hill of the prehistoric settlement. Here we will discuss the prehistoric settlement, the population’s history, any archeological findings and discoveries. Guided tour of the archeological site of Philippi (UNESCO monument), with emphasis on findings and tradition connected with King Philip the II of Macedon and Alexander the Great. Guided Tour at the ancient Mudbaths of Lydia (baths of Alexander the Great) and the battle of Philippi where Cassius camped his army. Information on the mudbaths, the battle and the tradition of Alexander on the Pangeo mountain. Horse activity taking us through the story of Bucephalus, the famous horse of Alexander the Great Lunch at a local winery or tavern to taste “Alexander’s meal” paired with “Dionysus wine”. These involve local wine with wild boar to attempt to emulate Alexander the Great’s hunts. Return to hotel (For summer period there is the option to head to the beach)
