HISTORY
Dionysus is the god of wine, fertility and vegetation. Worshiped by the Thracian Hedonians, hence this area, in ancient times was called Hedonida.

Myths, legends and the tradition of wine are interwined with god Vackhos and many historical events and customs –such as Babougera, the fires of Dervena and the custom of Arapides, emanate from them. Dionysus’ worship extends in the entire area of Pangeo mountain and Menikio mountain as well as in the area of Drama. Dionysus’ successor was Orpheus, “the charmer of music and divination”, originator of mystic ceremonies, religious poet, prophet and priest.

Orpheus is associated with the myth of the Argonauts and the kidnapping of Persephone. According to tradition this took place in the Zygakti river, where much later, the first European Christian was baptised by Apostle Paul.
